Our Magnet Focus
"At Carrillo K-5 Magnet School, our mission is for every student to grow academically and socially, to have equal access to educational opportunities and to exceed the state standards in Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science through the integration of Fine Arts, Performing Arts and Technology."
Our new magnet focus, is known as STAM (Science, Technology, Art, and Music). Carrillo K-5 Magnet is the premier STAM, numeracy and literacy school educating the whole child.
We believe that 21st Century learners must be more than a set of test scores. We continue to uphold rigorous standards to give our students a strong foundation in reading, writing, and math. The beauty of our STAM focus is to create opportunities to inspire our K-5 students in Science, Technology, Art, and Music. These various tools of learning together increases student growth and academic success. Carrillo works hard to address all the educational needs of our students.
In 2009, Carrillo transitioned from our previous magnet focus of Literacy in grades K-2, Desert Ecology in grade 3, Anthropology (Native Americans of the Southwest) in grade 4, Archaeology in grade 5. we have retained many of the elements of this previous focus with our collaboration with la Pilita Museum, but have sharpened our focus on additional skills and disciplines that will help to create successful 21st Century students.
Dias de los Muertos presentation
Our students are assigned a classroom teacher who is responsible for the basic core curriculum and integrating lessons with the STAM teachers. In addition Carrillo has an itinerant GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) teacher, a fulltime ELD (English Language Development) teacher and Exceptional Education resource teachers.
We are proud that our magnet program addresses such a wide range of curricular interests and needs, and we feel our students are better served when challenged to expand their knowledge and skills.
