Enrolling Stakeholders.

Schools need the support and involvement of the staff, the families and the community they serve in order to effectively improve student achievement.  School councils can more effectively fulfill their function if they work in an inclusive manner, structure their meetings and procedures to empower all members of the school council and practice the principals of shared decision-making.  It is essential of all members of the school council be "enrolled" in the concept and purpose of shared decision-making in order to provide active representation of their constituency.

Effective school councils encourage participation of all stakeholders by:

  • Providing clear and well-publicized information inviting stakeholders to participate in decision making.

  • Providing adequate training in areas such as curriculum, budget and initiatives.

  • Maintaining parity between parents and teaching staff.

  • Providing important information regarding school jargon, school policies, practices and student performance data.

  • Ensuring that all stakeholders have an opportunity for input when planning for school improvement.

  • Treating concerns with respect and actively seeking resolutions to problems.

  • Educating parents and the community about the roles and responsibilities of school committees, superintendents, principals and school councils.

  • Encouraging stakeholders to act responsibly as advocates for quality education for all students.

  • Promoting participation at the school, district, state and national levels to address issues that impact student achievement.

  • Providing training to stakeholders to help them work as effective partners.
