Holladay Magnet School

DISCIPLINE POLICY

The Tucson Unified School District’s “Guidelines for Student’s Rights and Responsibilities” handbook provides definitive guidance regarding students’ behavior and discipline procedures.  The Principal and staff of each school are responsible for implementing this guidance.

The Principal and staff members at Holladay Magnet School desire that all students enrolled in our school be given the opportunity, and encouraged to acquire skills and attitudes which promote self-discipline, self-respect and respect for others, responsibility for one’s behavior, and reasonableness in expectations.  Corrective actions must be based on positive expectations and outcomes for all.

Each teacher will develop classroom rules and procedures that include student’s input and result in a safe and nurturing teaching and learning environment.  A list of “Don’t” is not sufficient to achieve this objective.  Student behavior will not used as a reason to lower grade.

Discipline at Holladay will be based on the following Lifeskills and guidance:

  • Be Responsible

  • Be Respectful

  • Be Reasonable

All staff members are expected to participate in the implementation of this policy, District Rules and Policies, Laws of the State of Arizona and the United States.

Typical consequences for violating school and classroom “Rules” and other acceptable standards of behavior at Holladay:

Time Out – An alternative place for students who disrupt the learning environment, endanger others and/or property of others, and those who may appear to be “out of control”.

Meaningful Work – Providing meaningful work for all students, once they can be really effective.  Meaningful work is based on the belief that many misbehaving students lack a sense of “meaning” and “power” in school.

Community Service – Community service is a means for students to contribute service to the school as a consequence of inappropriate behavior.  Typical examples of community service include supervised activities such as: picking up litter, cleaning a surface defaced or damaged by that student, or sweeping.

Contact with Parents and Principal – Contact with parents is desirable and may be required by the TUSD Rights and Responsibilities handbook.  Parents will be contacted whenever formal disciplinary actions are imposed.

**Special Education and 504 Students – Special rules and procedures govern discipline of students who are in the Exceptional (Special) Education Program.
