School Tax Credit

Arizona tax law (ARS 43-1089.01) allows taxpayers a tax credit up to

1. Two hundred dollars for a single individual or a head of household.

2. Four hundred dollars for a married couple filing a joint return. A husband and wife who file separate returns for a taxable year in which they could have filed a joint return may each claim only one-half of the tax credit that would have been allowed for a joint return.

This is an actual credit against income tax imposed upon the individual. Contributions that are eligible for a tax credit are donated directly to schools, not the state and not even the school district. This money can only be used by the school to which it is contributed and only for extracurricular activities.

In the law, "extracurricular activity" means any optional, noncredit, educational or recreational activity which supplements the educational program of the school, whether offered before, during, or after regular hours. The possibilities are endless.

How can I take advantage of this tax credit?

1. Write a check made payable to Hudlow Elementary

You may also contribute by credit card. Use the secure online Tax Credit form to make your credit card payment for Arizona Tax Credit Donations. Note: Credit card payments are only accepted through the online form, not at the office at Hudlow.

2. Indicate on the check that the donation is for Hudlow.

3. Mail or deliver the check to the front office.  You can also send it in with your child.

4. We will need your social security number so you can get the tax credit.

5. Receive a receipt for any contribution of $10 or more.

Commonly Asked Questions

bulletWhen can I make the payment to Hudlow?

To receive the credit for the current tax year, the payment must be made before December 31, 2009.

bulletMust a taxpayer have a child enrolled in a public school to claim the tax credit?

No, any taxpayer can contribute to any public school of their choice. This means relatives and friends living in Arizona could each contribute up to $200 to Hudlow.

bulletIs this just a tax deduction?

No, you may receive a tax credit of $400 (or the amount you contribute to the schools) toward the amount of income tax imposed upon you by the state. In other words if you are a tax payer and you owe the state $500 in taxes when you file your return, that amount will be reduced by the $400 you donated the school. Leaving you only owing $100 to the state.
