PHILOSOPHY, MISSION STATEMENT AND GOALS

Kellond Community School (KCS) views children as feeling, thinking, creative, and growing individuals.  We provide a supportive community within which children expand their learning and development.  We believe that for learning to be effective and retained, it must be fun.  At school, children move in a miniature version of the larger society in which we live.  Our goal is to provide them with an opportunity to test themselves, and develop in a safe, non-threatening environment full of choices and challenges.  We support and encourage them to become problem-solving, sensitive, contributing, and responsible members of the “school community” as initial preparation for adulthood in a complex society.  As part of Tucson Unified School District , we adhere to the District Mission, Vision, Strategic Priorities and Values Policy.  A copy is available in the office upon request or on the District’s website.

 CURRICULUM

KCS uses an Emergent Curriculum approach to working with children.  It is child-centered and child-guided, and is based on the dynamics of the current group of children and the way the teaching staff works with that group of children.  It focuses on thematic units that are of interest to children and uses play as a dynamic form of learning that involves a wide range of intellectual, social, emotional, and physical capabilities.  The creative arts and play activities provide opportunities for the total development of the child.  The curriculum encompasses a wide variety of experiences that are based on an understanding of child development and which support and expand each child’s development.  The curriculum is aligned with the Arizona State Standards for Early Childhood Education.  The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to challenge children to reach their fullest potential, and allows for adaptations and modifications to ensure access for all children.  A more extensive curriculum is available to you upon request from the office.

 SCHOOL BOARD

The Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) Governing Board is composed of five members.  It is the board’s duty to develop and establish policies, which guarantee that each and every student in TUSD shall receive the skills, service and support required for an excellent education.

 ADHS PROGRAM LICENSURE

KCS is licensed and regulated by the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS), located at 400 W. Congress, Suite 100 , Tucson , AZ 85701 , (520) 628-6540.  The ADHS inspects the school annually to ensure that the facility is in compliance with all licensure regulations.  These inspection reports are available in the Community school office upon request.

 STAFF

The staff at KCS have extensive teaching experience. Preschool teachers have a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, elementary education, or a closely related field, or AA or CDA certificates plus extensive teaching experience.  Preschool teaching assistants have a minimum of a CDA.  All staff members have previous successful work with young children and are required to participate in a minimum of 18 hours of continuing education per year.  Every effort is made to ensure staff stability.

 EMOTIONAL WELL BEING OF CHILDREN

Nurturing of young children is an important factor in their growth and development.  Both verbal interaction and appropriate physical contact between staff members and children are a desirable and necessary part of a healthy, safe, and supportive early childhood education program.  A child may need assistance in the bathroom, or in changing clothes; a child may seek physical contact or comfort in the course of daily activities.  All staff contacts with children are based on meeting the needs of the child while maintaining respect for the child’s individuality, preference, and well being.

Tuition for both the Preschool and the Before and After School Programs is due on a monthly basis.  Bills are sent home the last week of each month.  Charges are for the upcoming month.

As a courtesy to parents, we are happy to accommodate you if you would like to pay half on the 1st and half on the 15th, at no additional cost.  Please make arrangements with the Coordinator if you would like to do this.  Tuition must be paid within 5 school days of the 1st or the 15th of the month to avoid a $20 late payment fee.  If unpaid, your child will not be allowed to return to the program until the account has been paid in full.

As valued Kellond parents we will make every effort to work with you to make sure your account is up to date, and more importantly to ensure that your child is in attendance
