4th and 5th Grades

Teachers: Carrie Smith, Hortencia Cocoba, M Cameron Carley
*Third/Fourth Grade Class Teachers: Angela Bennett and Maria Elena Martinez

In Fourth and Fifth Grade, children rely on their reading and writing skills to analyze, to find application and to construct deeper understanding of all subject areas and project work that crosses content area boundaries. Children continue to use a variety of symbolic languages to communicate their theories and feelings as they construct understanding in all curricular domains.

Children's experiences in mathematics and science support their abilities as creative problem solvers and critical thinkers. As their mathematical thinking advances children are applying their skills to analyze, formulate, solve, differentiate and evaluate in a wide variety of learning experiences.

Cursiosity and creative experimentation drive all learning at Ochoa. On-going opportunities for this to happen are always emerging. Projects that develop from these experiences involve asking good questions that lead children to analyze, synthesize and evaluate the interconnectedness of the world around them.

We recognize that children thrive in social environments that create safety, healthy relationships, and a strong sense of community. Morning meetings happen daily, children work in small groups and every child will have the opportunity to contribute to the care of each other and to the classroom.

As they develop and strengthen their dispositions to be innovative thinkers, the fourth and fifth graders are supported in taking on more responsibility in decision making and contributing to the well-being of the school community.

Families are welcomed as partners in their children's school experience. Our relationship and collaboration will begin your visits to the classroom and on-going participation in the school community.
