The purpose of this sheet is to provide students with a ready reference for preparation of written compositions, themes, or reports required in all Sabino High School English classes.  Place this paper in your notebook and have it with you each day in class. 

Headings

1.  In the upper right hand corner of the first page, write your name, period, teacher’s name, and the date.

2.  Each succeeding page must have your last name followed by the appropriate page number in the upper right hand corner; number all pages except the title page in Arabic numerals (2, 3, 4,  . . .).

3.  Center the title on the first line.  Leave one blank between the title and the first line of the text.  All papers, unless otherwise directed, must have a title.

4.  No punctuation is needed at the end of your title. Unless referring to another work in your title, quotations marks or underlining is improper.

5. Works Cited and/or Works Consulted pages must have an appropriate heading and title.

Form and Appearance

6.  All papers must be double-spaced throughout, without exception.

7.  All typed components must be submitted on standard white 8-1/2 x 11 paper using black or dark blue ink.

8.  Hand-written components must be legible; that is, writing which is clear to others.  All assignments must be written in black or dark blue ink and submitted on 8-1/2 x 11 college-ruled paper.

9.  Partial sheets of paper or paper torn from a spiral notebook will not be accepted.

10. Write only on the front side of the paper.

11.  Staple all components in the upper left corner no more than ½” from the top and side of the page.

12.  When the completed assignment is submitted, the components must be attached in the  following order:

TOP: final copy, including Works Cited page MIDDLE: edited draft(s)
BOTTOM: any designated pre-writing activities

Margins, Indentations, and Formatting

13.  All typed work must be done in 12-point type with standard font.  For example:
 Times New Roman  12, Courier 12

14.  Headings (such as name and page number)  will be ½” from the top of each page.

15.  All other work will adhere to one-inch margins (top, bottom, right, left) of the page.

16.  Indent the first line of each paragraph by one TAB equaling five spaces.

17.  Modern Language Association (MLA) citation format will be utilized.

Symbols and Corrections

18.  AWK  ideas or phrases are awkwardly expressed

19.  SP        spelling error(s)

20.  RO      run-on sentence; lack of proper punctuation

21.  FRAG  or  F           
sentence fragment – a group of words punctuated as a sentence but lacking a complete thought

22.  WC  Word choice error – inappropriate word or incorrectly used word

23.  VT  verb tense inconsistency,  such as shifting from past to present

24.    3X __    or  C     capitalization error
