Boys Volleyball

In opening action against Valencia... Goin' over the game plan...

Overall Safford’s boys 2010 volleyball season was successful.  We finished with a 6-3 record, finished tied for second in the division, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the playoffs.  The team grew stronger as the season progressed, moving beyond basic skills and towards a three-hit offense culminating with a spike.  Our best overall player was 8th grader Jesse Gonzales, a three-year starter.  He not only played outstanding defense, but also passed well when needed and was the team’s best spiker.  Willy Villamon led the team in aces, while Abram Carrasco was not far behind.  Boss Mbonera was the team’s most improved player.  He started the final two games on the “A” team, proving to have the most consistent serve during the playoffs.  Quentin Rutlin and Alan Murillo were our most consistent players during the course of the year.  Nick Trujillo and Jose Rios were outstanding additions to the team that provided constant encouragement and leadership, as well as good play.  Rui Rui and Lual Magot really came on at the end of the year with their aggressive play at the net and good teamwork.  David Barrett made the jump to an everyday starter whose overall game developed nicely.

Next year looks bright with returning players that developed basic skills and are ready to take their games to the next level.  Joining Alan as players next year will be Nur Muhammed, Joel Leyva, Eddie Odu, Luiz Mendoza, and Ajuong Rui.  Six returning players is not a lot so we are looking forward to next year’s new additions who will compete for starting positions and push the returning players.
