Schumaker Elementary School in Tucson, Arizona was
built in 1964 at a cost of $472,722. Construction
was by Craven-Hague Construction Co. and the
architects were Blanton & Cole. The original
building had 17 classrooms and a multipurpose room.
A two-room addition was built in 1966 at a cost of
$46,100The
school was named for Miss Ivah Schumaker, a teacher
at Davidson School for 25 years. She began teaching
in District 1 in the fall of 1931. Science was a
favorite subject with her. She helped students at
the school start a small museum, encouraged them to
plant vegetables in window boxes, and taught them
southwestern crafts and folklore. Miss Schumaker
taught in Columbus, Ohio and New Mexico before
coming to Arizona. She taught for 41 years before
retiring in 1956.
