Schumaker Elementary School

Schumaker Elementary School in Tucson, Arizona was built in 1964 at a cost of $472,722. Construction was by Craven-Hague Construction Co. and the architects were Blanton & Cole. The original building had 17 classrooms and a multipurpose room. A two-room addition was built in 1966 at a cost of $46,100

The school was named for Miss Ivah Schumaker, a teacher at Davidson School for 25 years. She began teaching in District 1 in the fall of 1931. Science was a favorite subject with her. She helped students at the school start a small museum, encouraged them to plant vegetables in window boxes, and taught them southwestern crafts and folklore. Miss Schumaker taught in Columbus, Ohio and New Mexico before coming to Arizona. She taught for 41 years before retiring in 1956.
