At the beginning of August, Secrist Site Council met for a delicious
breakfast at the Good Egg to get an early start for the new school year. We
discussed several issues that we would like to either cover more thoroughly
in the future, or just make everyone affiliated with Secrist Middle School
more aware of.
(1) Tax credit money:
How much does our school have? And where does our tax credit money go? With
every newsletter, we will share who has used tax credit money and for what.
In the past, some of the money has been used for school tutoring, coaches,
in- struments, field trips, and science supplies.

artistic
genres. Our drama, choir, band and
orchestra all function well to bring Secrist students into the world of
performing arts, and our performers participate in numerous festivals and
presentations. Our technology
classes are equally good, opening the doors to the innovative world of
tomorrow and teaching students how to apply technology to their everyday lives. Spanish classes are available for
students at several levels, including a high school credit class. And incoming sixth graders may take
“rotation,” in which they are exposed to nine-week segments of several
elective classes. (Principal continued on pg. 3)

Secrist have multiple opportunities for extra-curricular activities as
well. Our basketball, soccer,
volleyball and track teams regularly compete for city championships.
Another
fabulous program we have is our advisory program. It is based on the small learning community model. It helps with the sometimes scary
transition to middle school. It is
a wonderfully enriching place for students to begin each day. During this time, various activities
take place. Students might seek help
on homework or possibly choose to spend some time reading. They are given the opportunity to
participate in community service projects.
They also discuss topics such as conflict resolution, respect and
responsibility. They remain with
their advisory teacher for all three of their years at Secrist. This creates a mentoring opportunity
that is unparalleled.
We
have rigorous academic programs as well.
We are a “performing plus” school, offering many opportunities for
students to excel academically. We
offer GATE and honors classes as well as classes for high school
credit. We offer lunch time and
after-school tutoring. Our class
sizes are small, but most importantly our teachers are committed to success
for all students.

Just
today I got a letter from a neighborhood parent whose child is not only new
to Secrist but also new to the public school system. The parents were making it very clear
why they were choosing Secrist, and one of my favorite lines in the letter
was this: “We chose to send him to Secrist because it has a strong
reputation in the community…” It is
gratifying to read a remark like that because all our teachers and other
staff strive to make our children feel safe and cared for, because our
teachers and staff work hard to prepare every one of our children to be
high achievers and responsible citizens.
There are
hundreds of great reasons to send students to Secrist Middle School. One of the best things about Secrist is
our array of elective classes. We
are committed to creating an enriching elective experience for each
student. Our Fine Arts Department
is extraordinary. The visual arts
classes we offer are creative and provide students with an opportunity to
explore a wide variety of
