Counselor’s Corner by Mrs. Norwood

I wanted to thank the volunteers from Davis Monthan Air Force Base who came and spoke with our 8th graders about respect and dating violence. They gave a nice presentation, showing a video and then leading a discussion explaining what dating violence is and how it can be prevented. I especially liked how they focused on what it takes to have a good relationship: trust, honesty, responsibility, fairness, and open communication, were a few characteristics mentioned, and the students were reminded that these are not only important in a dating situation, but in any friendship. One of the websites recommended is www.loveisrespect.org. Thank you MSgt Prewitt and Airman Fawn!

A few important dates coming up: for any 8th grader who turned in their application for University High School (UHS), and has at least a 3.0 GPA, we should be getting notification soon about testing. UHS is scheduled to test at Secrist on Thursday, Nov. 15th, in the library. If you are being tested, please make sure you have a good nights sleep the night before and eat a healthy breakfast! Also, any one interested in being tested for the GATE program for next year, needs to have their application for testing filled out and turned in by Monday, Nov. 19th. I have the applications in my office, so a student or parent can come by and pick one up.

Lastly, the holidays are almost upon us. I hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving and a great Winter break. Remember that during these next couple months, we may all start feeling stressed with holiday preparations, shopping, traveling, and entertaining visitors. Students need to stay focused and continue attending school on a regular basis. Every day absent means another day of making up work---not to mention valuable class time missed participating in labs, activities, etc. So, try to relax, keep a regular routine, and have enjoyable, stressfree holidays!

The Secrist “Fall Ball” dance sponsored by the Student Council was held on Thursday, October 19th. The cafeteria was decked out with tables dressed in gold, silver and black. Press on lights and sparkling centerpieces added a festive at-mosphere to the resting/ converstation space.

The dance floor was a great hit with its dazzling lights and gold streamers

plus silver and gold balloons. Desert DJ’s provided the music to entertain 200+ students who were “dressed to impress”. Mrs. Wiggins, Mrs. Turner, and Mrs. Tucker were dressed to the nines. The display of unity on the dance floor as everyone did the Cha Cha Slide was a sight to see-smiling faces as dancers kept time together.

Coach Norman is in his tenth year coaching volleyball. Coach Norman exclaimed, “ This year’s team is a great example of how hard work pays off in the long run.”

Fantastic job girls! Hopefully next year the Secrist girls can reclaim their title.
