o    FUNDRAISING

-Box Tops.  Ernie reports that the company requires that the form be completely filled so he will send out completed forms ASAP.  There are two yearly disbursements.  One is due by end of February and paid out in April and the other is due by end of October and paid out in December but you can deliver them anytime so they don’t stack up.    Please continue to collect all year round and remember that all proceeds are used to benefit our school.  Last disbursement was $925.91Good Job Everyone!!!!

-Ernie has been contacted by, Great American and Fiesta Fundraising so that we can set an appointment to see what they have to offer for the fall fundraiser.  They will come in and give us a demonstration of some of their products.  Ernie will see if they can make our next meeting on April 5th.  Anyone who would like to be a part of this decision making process must attend the meeting to have a vote.

-Mrs. Bowman suggests that we do a loose change collection fundraiser.  Every class would have a big water jug in their class so that anyone can just drop in their loose change.  She says that this would get us away from selling any junk food items.  Ms. Lugo also suggested a Walk-A-Thon, Jamila suggested a Spell-A-Thon or we can also do the discount cards that sell for $10 and offer discounts to businesses in our area.  We will table this discussion for a later meeting.

o    MOVIE NIGHT:

Movie night will be Friday March 25th at 6pm.  It was discussed and voted on that we will be showing “Despicable Me” which is a family comedy by Universal Pictures, Rated P.G.  Jamila made a flyer that will go out on Monday, March 14th.  It was decided that we would once again be selling hot dogs, popcorn, chips, cookies and beverages.  To avoid over crowdedness in the cafeteria, we will provide a second screen on our outside lawn and stage area.  Students need to turn all presale money in to their teacher by March 23rd, which is the day that our Treasurer will pick up all presales.  There will be extra forms in the office if needed.  Fidel says we can get a second audio system from District office.  Ms. Lugo will talk to Mr. Garcia about movie screen and audio set up.  We will also need volunteers for set up and clean up.  Anyone is welcomed.

o    BOARD ELECTIONS:

We have many openings for anyone who would like to be a part of the decision making at our school.  Ernie will be sending a note out to let all parents and staff know about the positions available and a future meeting will be set for elections.  Anyone who is interested and would like more information, please leave a message with the office or send us an email as soon as possible.  Positions available:

-Mrs. Bowman is requesting 3 busses ($180/ea.) for the 4th grade fieldtrip on March 11thand would like to know if we are going to be able to fund it.   An online vote to approve the expense was made just needed to confirm the cost of the busses.  Should be $150/ea.

-She also reports that KOLD has asked if White Elementary would like to put a weather station on our campus.  This would require for us to purchase a $7,000 weather camera that is equipped with a computer program that has lots of data and also teaches students how to collect data.  It is TUSD approved.  Mrs. Bowman is looking into getting a grant from the Arizona Game and Fish Department that will pay up to $5,000.  She will not know if we got the grant until end of April.  She is asking if we like this idea and if we do for us to help with the rest of the money.  Everyone agrees that this is something the students would benefit from.  Ms. Lugo says she might have funds available and will give us an update as soon as she finds out.

Ernie sent out an e-mail asking if anyone had any concerns or requests.

·         Miss. Lugo has informed us that the district has a new policy that requires teachers to provide 30 minutes of P.E. twice a week for all students.   We have a request for the BPTC to help provide some P.E. equipment, such as balls, jump ropes, hop scotch designs, ball pumps, etc….  Ernie says that we were provided with various balls, volleyball net and poles from Great American Fundraising from our previous fundraiser.  Miss. Lugo says she will inventory what we have to find out what we need.   Jamila suggested that we provide a coach to assist with P.E.  One option is to use our monitors and pay them accordingly or try to get volunteers from the U of A who can use it as school credit.  Miss. Lugo will work on a schedule to see how many hours and what hours a coach will be needed.  We are roughly looking at 6 hrs. a day for the days left in the semester at about $12/hr.  She will also look at the policy on Parent Teacher Clubs paying for wages.  In the past, we have lost money from doing this so we want to be careful before we decide to try it again.

·         A concern came up about us not sending reminder notices for our meetings.  It was discussed that parents should be getting enough notice from the marquee, Principles newsletter, our website and teachers own newsletters.  With the exception of January, meetings are usually held every first Tuesday of the month at 6p.m. in the cafeteria.  Everyone is welcomed.

·         Another concern is the need to have alternating meeting times.  We have tried having meetings right after school and have found that evening meetings have a larger response.  Currently, Ernie is not available to facilitate after school meetings but Mrs. Castro says that she is willing to facilitate at that time.  Miss Lugo suggests that we keep our current time slot for the rest of this semester and try to work out a schedule for next school year

·         Sandy Monzingo would like for us to form a committee to find a definite mission statement for the BPTC.  Ernie suggests that we get together during summer break to get this done and to also refresh our bylaws.  Notice of meeting will go out in May and everyone is welcomed to participate.

·         Olga Crook would like for us to survey our Teachers and students to find out what positive changes they are looking for in our school.  She would also like to know how we could attract fun activities for our students to participate in after school.  Some schools provide karate, guitar, etc… and she would like White to provide something positive for our kids to participate in as well.  Miss. Lugo says that some of those organizations would have to go through rentals to rent our school in order to provide their service.   Our own Teachers can be paid a stipend to offer an after school activity as well using tax credit money.  Currently we do have Ecology club and a Girl Scout Club at our school and soon there will be track.

·         Welcome to our new Community Rep., Lupita Vega, who is already working hard at getting a parenting class started as well as computer and English classes.

·         Sock Hop Dance:  Our 4th annual fifties style dance will be on 2/21/11 from 6-8 pm in the cafeteria.  There will be prizes given out for best fifties style clothes and limbo contest.  Other fun activities to have are the hand jive, hula hooping, dancing the twist, hokie poky and the chicken dance.   The Flyer for presales should be going out this Friday.  Mrs. Castro will organize the Teacher volunteers for the decorating committee.  Any parents wanting to volunteer need to contact Ernie at whitebulldogclub@gmail.com Miss. Lugo will help M.C., Mr. Rene Garcia will help set up the music and Parent volunteers will organize the food booth.  It was decided that we should sell hot dogs instead of pizza this year as well as popcorn, cookies, sodas and water.  We will need volunteers for getting the food ready, serving, ticket booth at entrance, set up and clean up.  Decorations are in the BPTC room.  Need to be here at least 2 hours early to set up.

·         MOTION:  Motion to allow a budget up to $400 to be used to purchase P.E. equipment was made by Sandy and seconded by Jamila.  Motion passed by final vote of 10-0.

Bulldogs Present:  Jamila Miqbel, Ernesto Garcia, Maribel Serrano, Russ and Sandy Monzingo, Lupita Leyva-Vega, Charlotte Castro, Josie and Fidel Molina, Olga Crook and Cris Lugo.

Book Fair Report- A very special thanks to all the hard work and dedication put in for Mrs. Leon. She did a great job manning the book fair and thanks to all the parents that volunteered and help families in purchasing books. As always, Thank you to all the families and parents that attended, we sold $6,000.00 in books! Mrs. Leon would like to cash out the profit of $1540.00 a brand new computer workstation for the kids to be able to use during their library time. Also, she will purchase Girls USA, Sports Illustrated for kids, and Zoobooks, and school library journal Black stallion for 1st and 5th graders.

Parents! Coming soon you’ll be able to enjoy the library yourselves too. Mrs. Leon is putting together a parent collection and we need your donations of gently used books that you’d like other parents to read as well. She will be donating a big supply of her own books as well. Visit the library with your children and open an account and start reading!

Interactive board- is a very great new technology tool for a lot of classrooms. An advanced high performance projector with interactive pens and presentations enables children to interact on any subject. There are lesson plans that enable students to stay actively involved with interactive pens and markers. Mr. Molina found online for $625.00 but the stand that mobilizes it is $720.00. There may be some issues with it not being a TUSD vendor preferred brand. They will not support it or maintain it. Discussion was tabled until we further investigate and find more details to if TUSD will support.

Olga’s Fundraising Idea- Olga, a parent, presented a great idea to develop a calendar for families to have. It would be perfect for a beginning school year gift for our students. The idea would be to leave about 10 spaces for local businesses to advertise for $100 per space. For a one page card stock sheet the cost would be $245.00 for 800 copies in just black in white. Discussion was tabled so we can find out more info on if we can do it for beginning of school year or what the cost would be if we did a calendar book.

Motions The group voted on providing teachers and support staff $100.00 reimbursement for 1st semester. And for 2nd semester teachers $100.00 and support staff $50.00. Receipts are due on November 30th for 1st semester. Please fill out appropriate request form.

The group voted and approved the purchase of awards for Ms. DeFeo and Mrs. Watson from Tuller Trophys.

Lookout for the VIP receipt coupons allows us to go to boxtop online and redeem online also. There will be a pizza party given at the end of this school year (?) For the class with most box tops we are still working on this item.

Fry’s VIP:  30 cards are currently linked to White. Will need to reach 50,000 in sales to get a check for $500.00 a good idea would be to give a handout one Sunday morning with our White Elementary flier w/ the barcode to link existing customers.  Will also need to follow up with Food City to see where we are.

Book Fair:  BOGO book fair schedule for last two days of school May 25th and May 26th parent or family volunteers would greatly be appreciated. We’ll need to know how many volunteers are available to determine hours of operation. Please see our librarian Gail to sign up for volunteering. Attached is the sign-up form for the book fair. Please let Gail know as soon as possible. Gail will be retiring at the end of the year and at this time no monies have been designated for a new librarian. Jamila will follow up with U of A librarian studies to get hooked up with volunteers attending U of A earning credits.

Popcorn Machine:  Some valid points were made as to this year being the most difficult dealing with the budget cuts and frustration with the district. Some feel like this is not a time to be spending money on those luxuries when there are struggling teachers with not enough resources, money for field trips, supplies etc. the team voted on Popcorn Machine. Gail, Robbie, and Naomi chose not to vote.

Teacher Feedback for supplies needed: A good idea/plan was brought forth by Jamila to have a budget at beginning of next school year to go out and buy all sorts of supplies for all teachers and have a universal parent/teacher bulldog group room which is just north of lunchroom windows. Jamila and Naomi took a look and it’s a great size to hold meetings, store supplies, event supplies etc. Dr Samuel appointed Fidel to help us get it cleaned out after Spring Break and we can get started. We will need to vote to have this done and get started before the end of the year. Document readers are a high priority for teacher’s classrooms. We’ll need to research which readers are best for purchasing. The Parent/Teacher Group team voted on the $100.00 monies for second semester for teachers and 50.00 for support staff, Ernesto will get a detailed list of who are the support staffs. You will need to fill out the request for funds form in order to receive your monies for second semester, the deadline for is April 1st.  Attached is the request for funds form.

Monitors: We need to follow up with monitors and Dr. Samuel to see if plan worked to have designated coverage during school time. Dr Samuel still feels we need to replace Marcelo’s position (coach position).

Live Workshop Play: The group voted and approved $500.00 to be the backup for the Live Theater Workshop. The group discussed that Tax Credit monies might be better to use for this event since it was already used to pay the first $500.00. We need to contact the Site Counsel for approval (Mrs. Orantez).

Movie Night: Movie Night is March 26th from 6pm-8pm children need to be accompanied by a parent. Not all the details have been worked out keep an eye out for flyer.

 ATTENDEES:

Maribel Serrano, Jamila Miqbel, Dr. Samuel, Josefina Molina, Robbie Ramirez, Carolyn Hollis, Margaret Watson, Nancy DeFeo, Fidel Molina, Evelyn Gonzales, Naomi Drew, Rene Garcia, William Mark

 FOCUS ITEMS:

Treasurers Report:  Checking:  $10,751.41 & Savings:  $2,411.93.

Sock Hop:  Made $605.68 at sock hop including some T-shirt sales plus $140 from See’s candy bars.

Scholastic Book Fair:  Total sales were $4,776.45 and our profit from that is $1,125.46.

Thank you to all who helped in any way with these events.

Fundraisers Update:

Box tops:  Keep collecting your box tops and turn them in to your child’s teacher. Teachers have set goals for students to reach and have offered incentives when they reach those goals.  Tiffany Garcia, the box top coordinator, was thinking of purchasing a collection box to put by office but the teachers say they have their own technique for collecting and counting the box tops.  Need to have the upcoming deadline.  Ernie will contact Tiffany to get an update.

Food City:  Need to get an update from Eileen Gowe, Food City card coordinator.  Keep scanning those cards.  If you don’t have one yet they are available in the school office.

Fry’s V.I.P.:  Thank you to those who have linked their V.I.P. card to our school using the barcode provided in the last school newsletter.  We need to have 50,000 credits by 4/24/2010 so that we can receive a reward of $500.  Currently we have about 12,444 credits and the links have jumped from 17 to 30 members.  We know we can do better so please spread the word.

EScript:  Safeway and Macy’s cards must be linked to our school through the eScript website Last update was a balance of almost $100.  Dr. Samuel has acquired the pin number and will get more information. http://www.escrip.com/program/about.jsp.

Target:  Please visit the Target website to get more information on how you can help our school.  Currently we only have 21 links to our school.   https://redcard.target.com/redcard/rc_main.jsp

TUSD Title 1:  Dr. Samuel informed us that on 2/4/10 the staff and Site Council voted for White to become a full Title One school.  This will allow added funding for our school.  The application process will take about 2 months.  Parents vote is needed to go forward. Dr Samuel will be sending out literature soon regarding the Title One.

TEACHER SURVEY RESULTS:

Ernie sent out a survey to all teachers asking for items that they would like or need.  Key items where buses for field trips and technology.  We need to look at using tax credit money for some of these items.  Site Council is who decides how this money should be allocated so Dr. Samuel will have Site Council put tax credit money on the next agenda so that we can address these issues.

As far technology goes, our computers are from the late 80’s and it was suggested by the technology department that we should maybe try to purchase hard drives one year and buy monitors the next so that it won’t be such a financial hardship.  Dr. Samuel says that she would like to get a “cow” which is laptops from the district that are available for about $10,000.

Dr. Samuel feels that even though everything on the survey is important, the safety of our kids is more and would like us to concentrate on providing additional monitors.  Our large number of 712 kids makes it difficult for our current monitors to be at all places that require attention.  Especially around the restrooms and prohibited areas.  Ernie wants to know if TUSD looks at student numbers when hiring monitors but Dr. Samuels says that they provide some and ask the school to work within their budget to acquire what they can afford.  Monitors cost $2,200.00 for a semester.  Felipe, who is a monitor and a parent here at White, feels that the 3 monitors we currently have to monitor the lunches are sufficient and would like Dr. Samuel to give them a chance to establish a better routine to monitor the areas the kids get into.  Evelyn asked about the lunchtime couch position and feels that it would be wise to start it again.  Dr. Samuel will look into the funds that were not used from the last coach position.  There should be a balance of about $1,144.00.  Ernie asked if parents can volunteer at lunchtime to help monitor and Dr. Samuel says, yes.  Mrs. Watson mentioned a “POPS ON PATROL” program that existed in the past and said it was organized very well by a previous parent.  The students on patrol that Miss. Slaw wants to organize came up and Dr. Samuel says it is something that she will definitely want to establish next school year.  Our lunch times are from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Rodeo Barbeque:  2/24/2010.  Dr. Samuel sent a note home to parents asking for donations and hopes to receive responses by Tuesday the 22.  Food will be served up in the courtyard where there will be music and root beer floats. Games will be set up on the field.  Jamila is organizing the games and Naomi has offered to bring her portable freezer for the ice cream.

Movie Night:  3/26/2010.  Student council and parents on email list/list serve will help pick a movie to show on movie night.  Popcorn and drinks will be served.

May Fiesta:  Projected date is 5/7/2010.  It was suggested that we form a special committee for Fiesta because of the need for frequent meetings to better organize.  Ernie will ask Sandy Monzingo if she would like to head this committee.  We purchased booths from a carnival supply company for $250 that will be used for fiesta to make it more festive.  Jamila and Sandy also purchased various games that they will allow the school to use.

5TH Grade Banquet:  5/25/2010.  5th graders will celebrate with a Beatles theme party in the multipurpose room during lunch.  They will also have their promotion ceremony that day.  Would like to get a theme-based cake for the banquet.  Parent volunteers are needed to help organize.  Details for that day will be finalized in a meeting by the 5th grade team.

NEW ITEMS:

Pop Corn Machine:  Jamila is shopping for a good popcorn machine for the BPTC to purchase and has found that they range from $700-$1000 for a brand new one with warranty.  The group feels that a standard size machine is fine as long as we start popping early.  Evelyn will find out what size machine we used for movie night last year and will ask what brand would be the best for our school.  It was suggested that we can even sell popcorn to students at dismissal time but Mrs. Hollis brought up a legislative law that prohibits schools from providing junk food to students during school.  We would have to look into that to see if popcorn is considered junk food.  Another concern is that it would be a distraction for kids and they wouldn’t get to the buses on time.  Evelyn would like to know where we would store the machine and Dr. Samuel says she is working on getting us a room to store BPTC items.

Ecology Club:  Mrs. Defeo and Mrs. Watson are here to solicit funds for the turtle habitat that they are building with the help of Mrs. Hollis’s 5th grade class.  They were able to acquire grants from Lowe’s and the Department of Game and Fish and also donations from Young Block totaling $17,000 to form the habitat and to pay for tile work, tables in the patio and in the outdoor classroom by the new building.  They have even put up some of their own money to help with this project.  Since their funds are depleted they would like the BPTC to help by providing some funds to purchase plants for the habitat.  Can probably use tax credit money for this project but is a longer process to acquire the funds.  The students involved have written letters to nurseries in hopes of donations.  Other projects in mind are the “Three Sisters Heritage Garden” in the kinder area with the help of a Fiskars grant.  These awesome teachers are also involved in getting a grant to bring the “Odyssey of the Mind” program to our school.

Great American Fundraiser:  Evelyn will let Doug know that we will use him again next year.  He has invited a few members of our school to attend a luncheon at Desert Diamond on Old Nogales highway on 3/3/2010 from 10:30-1:30.  There will be giveaways and a bonus for our school to buy balls.  Ernie and Dr. Samuel will attend.

MOTIONS

1.  Robbie motioned that we give ecology club $150 to buy plants for habitat, Evelyn second the motion and the motion passed by unanimous voice.

2.  Evelyn motioned to use Great American for our fall fundraiser, motion was second and the motion passed by unanimous voice.

Ernie would like the staff to know that we are here to support them and in turn would like their support at all the great events we have planned for our school.  It is important that we interact more so that together we can reach all our goals in making this a better school for them and our kids.

Next meeting is set for Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 6pm.  Meetings are open to all staff and parents.

November 10, 2009 Parent Club Minutes

Thanks to all who helped with the fundraiser.  We made over $8000.  The fundraiser was delivered last Thursday.  We voted to go with Great American again next year.

We will need volunteers for Math/science/salsa night.  Set up will start at 5PM. We need people to put chips into bowls, label salsa, put out napkins, etc.  Maribel Serrano will get the supplies.  Everyone needs to get a map from Mrs. Harper at the door and then go to the cafeteria before we start the rotations.  Teachers will provide activities for math down the primary hallway and science activities and science experiments by Mrs. Hollis’s class will be in the multipurpose room.  Math Science Salsa night is from 6-8PM.

MS Keane got Olive Garden to donate dinners for a fundraising spaghetti night for Love of Reading, February 9. The Book Fair will be open that night, before and after the dinner.  Jamilla Mqbel may be able to get some teen volunteers to serve. We will discuss it more in January.

The club voted to give all teachers $100 since the fundraiser was successful.  If teachers turn in receipts for supplies by Dec. 11, they will be paid before Christmas break.  Otherwise, receipts are due by Dec. 17 and will be paid in January.  Make sure receipts are legible, clearly dated for this school year and if the receipt includes items NOT bought for school, please highlight the school items.  No food may be bought with the funds…this is simply for school supplies like paper, scissors, tape, books, pencils, poster board, kleenix, paint, markers, etc.  There is a form in each teacher’s box to fill out and attach to the receipt.

Naomi Drew offered to be the new secretary!  Yay!

We will discuss the new facilitator or co-facilitators at the January 12 6PM  meeting, as there is just an executive board meeting in December.

Eileen Gow gave Maribel the Food City form to run.  We’ll have cards to swipe to earn points with which to order supplies.

Signing as present at the meeting were: Murielle Coste, Gail Dent, Naomi Drew, Janette Dominguez, Leah Gomez, Maribel Serrano, Sandy Mozingo, Russ Mozingo, Eileen Gow, and Jamila Miqbel.
