GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION
Successful Alternative Schools.....
Work with the community giving students the tools they need to be successful in whatever areas they choose.
Instruct students and teachers to navigate the various language registers.
Adapt curriculum and schedule to students’ realities.
Use the entire school environment, not just one or two classes, to maintain success.
Provide youth with a community of support acting in an atmosphere of surrogate family.
Build in increased time for reading and math help.
Know that the attitudes of faculty and staff are sometimes as influential to youth as their home environments.
Utilize a blend of diverse instructional practices that complement individual student needs, interests, and learning styles (ex. small class size).
Understand the importance of providing productive approaches for dealing with frustration, anger, conflict, and rage in youth.
Demonstrate
a willingness to innovate and experiment thus staying on the cutting edge
of educational issues and change.
