Literacy First Grant

I am very pleased to announce that I was awarded a grant from the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, First Page Literacy Foundation to develop Books and MORE Take-Home Packs for Borton Primary Magnet School.

The materials have been ordered, and the students from Flowing Wells High School Government classes are busy helping me inventory and organize the materials.

Once several of the packs are ready, we are hoping to pilot the lessons with Kindergarten - 2nd grade children.

Students from Flowing Wells High School help inventory and sort materials for the Books and MORE Take-Home Packs.

The Books and MORE Take-Home Packs materials are sorted by theme. The dinosaurs seen here will be used in a backpack along with a set of books about dinosaurs. The activities included in the backpack will help the K - 2nd grade children practice reading, writing and math skills at home.

The first three Books and MORE Take-Home Packs have activities for K - 2nd grade children to practice the alphabet letters. The Chicka Chicka Boom Boom story and tape set by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault, illustrated by Lois Ehlert, has been included in these three backpacks. Tape players are  also included to give children the opportunity to hear this favorite story and read along over and over again right at home. The books on tape packs also offer our Structured English Immersion (SEI) students English language development opportunities.

Thank you First Page Literacy Foundation at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona for supporting Tucson teachers, parents and students. I strongly encourage community donors to continue their support. This project has not only provided materials for primary age children to improve reading, writing and math skills, it has provided an opportunity for high school students to get involved in their community.

Thank you FWHS volunteers for your time and energy. Your commitment to helping others is sincerely appreciated. I hope you will encourage other young people to continue their efforts to provide community service as well.
