March 2010

Principal’s Message – Mrs. Lisa Langford

Our Kindergarten Open House is March 10, 2010 from 9:15am to 10:30am.  We look forward to meeting our newest Collier family members.  The first day of Kindergarten is filled with excitement, joy and nerves.  Come get to know our teachers, staff and learn about our wonderful school community. It is a nice way to begin the new school experience.  We will take some time to show you our great programs.  At the same time you will get to know other parents.  Can’t wait to meet you and your child!!!  Call 584-4800 with questions.

Reading: A little, a big payoff

Question: What simple habit only takes 15 minutes a day but has a positive effect throughout your child’s life?

Answer: Reading aloud to your kindergartner.  It’s an enjoyable way to build the desire to read, and gives your child a big advantage.  Here are a few books to get you started:

Annabell Swift:Kindergartner by Amy Schwartz
Arthur Goes to School by Marc Brown
Chysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

Tip:  For older children, taking 15 minutes a day to read also has a positive effect throughout your child’s life.

AIMS/TERRANOVA

Spring is near and therefore it is time to gear up for the AIMS/TERRA NOVA assessments.  All year our teachers and students have been working hard to learn the skills needed to be successful academically.  To help your child prepare for the assessments we are sharing a few tips about the types of questions that often appear.

Multiple Choice:  Read all the answers before marking your choice.  Remember, your first instinct is usually best—so don’t change your answer unless you’re sure.    True/False: Look for words such as never, always, all, and none.  They’re usually in false answers.  Words like may or often are generally found in true answers.  Writing Prompt:  Read prompt at least twice.  Then, make a list of important thoughts or key points, about the topic before writing.  You can make a web.  Read through the finished paper to be sure you’ve included all your key points.  Check spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Tip:  Your child may feel more comfortable if she/he has gotten a good night’s sleep and breakfast in the morning.  They can bring a snack, also.

Reminders

If you know of a kindergartner in the neighborhood, Open House is March 10th at 9:15 am until 10:30 am.  I am accepting registration papers now!  Just come by the office for a packet!!

Safety Day

We had safety day at Collier! What a huge success. The blackhawk helicopter landed safely in our backyard and the students were able to climb through it and see how it works. There were police motorcycles, ambulance, bomb squad robot, rescue dogs. Each station had hands on equipment and a chance for the children to ask lots of questions. A big thank you to all our service people who gave their time! We would also like to thank LeBuzz, Mimi’s, Sertinos and PTA for the refreshments!! We appreciate Mary Buckingham, Sherie Illanas and. Beth Culbertson for all their work to make this a BIG success!!
