Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the ability to notice, think about, and manipulate the individual sounds in spoken words. An example of how beginning readers show they have phonemic awareness is by combining or blending the separate sounds of a word to say the word ("/c/ /a/ /t/ - cat").

Initial Sounds

  • Paw Park: Sassy Seals - an interactive site where students listen to a word and must select another word from a series of words that starts with the same sound.
