| Letter to families from Principal John Heidel: A thankful start to a fabulous Fall! |
Dear Fruchthendler Families,
It's hard to believe Fall is already here. Along with the cooler temperatures, we find ourselves in the second week of the second quarter of the school year. Our Fall Carnival was a fun filled evening for all who attended. It was good to visit with all the families and friends. I want to thank all the volunteers who turned our school into such a festive environment. The planning, games, fantastic food, and activities provided everyone with an enjoyable family evening. A sincere thanks to everyone who donated their time and talents to promote this gala event and a BIG THANK YOU to Mrs. Winkle and the Carnival Committee for a job well done from set-up to tear-down. THANKS!!
Fall also brings about the wearing of jackets and sweaters. Please take the time to mark your child's clothing with an identifying name so it can be retrieved if misplaced. Remember, the lost and found section for larger items is in the cafeteria. Small items are turned into the office for safekeeping.
This is also the time of the year to be thinking about your Tax Credit donation. If you haven't done it before, it is a great way to support the programs here at Fruchthendler. You may write a check ($400 for couples and $200 for individuals) to Fruchthendler Elementary School before 12/31/11 or go on line at http://www.tusd.k12.az.us/ and follow the Quick Links to “AZ TAX Credit.” You will receive a dollar-for-dollar credit on your state income tax with your receipt. IT COSTS YOU NOTHING! Please encourage your family and friends who live in Arizona to consider sending their tax credit to Fruchthendler. It is an easy way to provide our students with curriculum enrichment activities not provided by the district. If you prefer not to use the on line system, you may turn in checks at the front office. By checking “Greatest Need” funds can be used in all areas of support for our students.
The Toast to Technology 2 was a beautiful evening supporting our technology program. It was well attended by several of our families. Everyone enjoyed the food, socializing, and elegant setting. The final contribution for each school is being calculated. A BIG thank you to Mrs. Jamison for representing/coordinating Fruchthendler participation and all the families, teachers and staff that attended. We appreciate you support in this worthwhile project.
Reminder about Open Enrollment: If you are currently a family attending Fruchthendler through Open Enrollment, you will NOT need to fill out a form for next year if you wish your child to continue attending Fruchthendler. FOR NEW STUDENTS and or FAMILIES, forms are available at school or on line. The Open Enrollment window ends December 12, 2011 for the 2012-2013 school year. This is also the time many of our families start to look at middle schools for their fifth graders. Tucson Unified School District offers Townsend, our neighborhood middle school, along with several Magnet School programs that may meet the needs of your child/ren. Many of the schools are offering Open Houses to assist parents in their choice.
We will be applying for the A+ status again with the state this year. When we received the rating in 2008, it lasts for three years. After the three years we are able to reapply. A committee is in place to work on the application. We will keep you in the loop as the process progresses.
Safety reminders:
For safety reasons, the driveway on the west side of campus that leads into the faculty lot is not to be used for student drop off or pick up. Please use the Lodge pick up and drop off area on the east side of the school.
Thanks for not waiting in the halls before the dismissal bell rings. Keeping the halls clear for our students allows them to see where they are headed and stay in line during dismissal.
With the cool temperatures, many parents walk to school with their pet dogs. Please make sure that the dogs are leashed and not on school property. Some of our students are afraid of dogs and seeing them on campus can create an uncomfortable experience for our students.
Please, when you come into the building, sign in and out at the front office. If you intend to volunteer or visit a classroom, you need to sign the volunteer book and put a visitor or volunteer badge on. This also helps us appreciate the high level of volunteerism at our school, and to track our volunteer hours for the year. We appreciate your help and want to provide the safest environment for our students. I am still amazed at the large number of parent volunteers we have, and I can't thank you enough. You support is greatly appreciated.
I want to thank all of you for helping to make Fruchthendler such a pleasant place to work. As always your energy and support of our students and faculty is overwhelming. Thanks for helping us to provide the best possible educational opportunity for your students. Your support makes Fruchthendler the Excelling School it is!
Cordially,
John Heidel, Principal

| Special Note on 2011-12 Firebird Hoodies |
The enthusiasm for the new t-shirt design has been amazing and our Firebirds are looking awesome in this year’s design!
Unfortunately, there is no back stock on the hooded sweatshirts. They can be ordered, but we need enough to make it worth placing the order. So if you want a sweatshirt, we cannot guarantee when you will get it.
If you have already ordered a sweatshirt and would either like to cancel your order and receive a refund, please contact Cathy Rosen at cathjr@earthlink.net.
Orders are still being taken and fulfilled for short and/or long-sleeved t-shirts. Get your t-shirt order form by visiting:

| Time to make your 2011 AZ Tax Credit Contribution! |
Can you believe that the deadline to participate in the AZ Public School Tax Credit program is less than 2 months away? Please take some time to review the information. ANYONE who pays AZ State taxes can participate, including your family and friends.
Many people are asking – What’s the difference between the Tax Credit program and the $1 per Family per Day donation? Here is a summary to make it simple:
Arizona State Tax Credit
Goal $ 85k |
$1 per Day Family Pledge
Goal $ 54k |
| A Dollar for Dollar Tax Credit, you may contribute up to $400 for married couples or $200 for a single/head of household. You get the full amount back when you file your Arizona State taxes. By contributing, you are telling the state to designate that tax money for Fruchthendler. |
Tax deductible as a charitable donation, your taxable income will be lowered by the amount you donate. |
| Funds pay for: Tutors, Music, Art, Spanish, PE, Chess Club and Workshops |
Funds pay for: Technology, Library, Monitors, Substitute Teachers, Professional Development and Teaching / School Supplies |
| You can do both the public school tax credit and the private school tax credit |
$1 per Day ($180 per family) replaces other fundraisers the PTA has done in the past. |
This is your opportunity to direct how your tax dollars are put to use. Don’t forget to contribute. The DEADLINE IS DECEMBER 31, 2011. For more information on the program, or how to contribute, please go to: https://tusdstats.tusd.k12.az.us/paweb/utility/taxcredit/school.aspx?loc=225, or contact Principal John Heidel at 731-4400.

| PTA’s $1-a-Day Family Pledge Campaign Update: If you’ve been waiting to turns yours in, please don’t wait any longer! |
Thank you to all of our Fruchthendler families who have already turned in their $1-a-Day pledges! We have raised $26,155 toward our goal of $54,000! But we still have a ways to go.
Our goal of $54,000 is not inflated. It is a line in the budget that we must meet in order to provide vital educational programs and safety services that benefit all of our students such as:
- Library tech
- Technology
- Playground monitors
- Substitute teachers
- Classroom and teaching supplies
- Professional development
These areas are not paid for by the state or by our school district.
The funds raised from the $1-a-Day Family Pledge Campaign will benefit 100% of our students. That’s why we need 100% participation from our families.
Extended family members can also make a tax-deductible pledge in addition to your own pledge or on your behalf. Additionally, we are happy to set up a payment plan for those who would prefer to break their pledge into monthly or quarterly installments.
If you’ve been waiting to make your pledge, please don’t wait any longer! Please submit your family’s pledge today!
For more information on the $1-a-Day Family Pledge Campaign and/or to set up payment plans, please contact Fundraising Chair, MaryLynn St.Germaine at 349-8694 or email her at indenyl@hotmail.com.
And thank you again for helping to keep Fruchthendler…Fruchthendler. |

| Family Helping Families |
The Families Helping Families program began at Fruchthendler in 1989 with 8 families. Since then, the Fruchthendler community has helped 290 area families have a more joyous holiday season. We get our referrals from TUSD social workers, who thoughtfully hand pick families within our school district who have fallen on difficult financial times. These social workers and the families we help are amazed every year by the level of generosity and commitment Fruchthendler families have to this heartwarming program. Fruchthendler is the only school in Tucson that provides a service of this magnitude.
Profiles of the families are compiled and each class is assigned a family. Fruchthendler students and their families donate clothing, household items, non-perishable foods, and presents to their class family. These donations are placed in large, decorated boxes outside your child's classroom. Volunteers will sort and pack the gifts for delivery day. On delivery day, we strongly encourage volunteers to allow their children to accompany them to make the deliveries. Children can learn the first hand joy of giving and helping others.
Please be on the lookout for the Families Helping Families flyer that will be going home with your child in early November.
Thank you for your generous support of those in need in our community!

| Taste of the Farm Harvest Festival – Hosted by U of A’s Tucson Village Farm |
Our Fruchthendler Kindergarteners recently were treated to a fun and educational field trip over to Tucson Village Farm. It’s a great place for any of you to take your family for a day of fun and to learn more about growing and preparing fresh food.
Here’s what TVF has to say about who they are:
Tucson Village Farm (TVF) is a working urban farm built by and for the youth of our community. A program of the Pima County Cooperative Extension and the University of Arizona, TVF is a seed-to-table program designed to reconnect young people to a healthy food system, teach them how to grow and prepare fresh food, and empower them to make healthy life choices. To accomplish this, Tucson Village Farm offers year-round, instructional, hands-on programs for youth of all ages. We target urban youth from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. The farm, located at 4210 N. Campbell Ave., serves as a safe urban location where youth can come to be out of doors and engage in physical activity while contributing to and participating in local food production, preparation, and consumption.
They also host functions throughout the year, one of which is coming up very soon:
2nd Annual Harvest Festival on November 5th
10 AM – 2 PM
Learn how to grow, prepare, and eat fresh foods.
Free fun for the whole family! There is no charge to sample. Produce and plants will be available for purchase.

| Healthy Lifestyles Recipe of the Month: Holiday Sweet Potato & Pear Soup (Vegan Style!) |
With the weather finally turning cooler here in Tucson, we can all start turning our minds to the holidays and many of the yummy comfort foods that come along with the lower temps.
Even better if we can use some of our own or locally grown fresh produce to create delicious and healthy dishes for our families.
This recipe is taken from one of my favorite recipe gals at www.ohsheglows.com
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon vegan margarine
1 small onion, chopped
1/4 cup chopped carrot
1/4 cup chopped celery
3 medium-sized sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
2 pears, peeled and diced
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon paprika
5 cups vegetable broth
1/3 cup coconut milk
2 teaspoons maple syrup, or to taste
2 teaspoons lime juice, or to taste
salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Directions:
In a pot, heat margarine on medium heat. Add onion, carrot and celery and sauté for 1 minute. Add sweet potatoes, pears and thyme and sauté for about 2 minutes. Add paprika and veggie broth. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes or until sweet potato is soft.
Puree in a blender or food processor until smooth. Return to pot. Add coconut milk, maple syrup and lime juice. Simmer for 5 minutes. If soup is too thick add a little extra broth.
Season with salt and pepper, adding more syrup or lime juice as needed. Drizzle with maple syrup if preferred. Can be made up to 2 days ahead of time.
Total Prep time: 30 minutes. Cook time: 30 minutes
