Letter to families from Principal John Heidel: Fruchthendler shines bright this time of year!

Dear Fruchthendler Families,
Happy New Year and welcome to the second semester of the 2011-2012 school year. Many activities are coming in the near future; K-1 Spelling Bees, our 100th day of school, A+ Application, Science Fair, Track and Field, and preparation for Spring testing just to name a few. Please keep a close eye on the monthly calendars as things will continue to really come up fast. On behalf of the entire faculty, staff, and students here at Fruchthendler Elementary School, please accept our sincerest appreciation for your great generosity with Tax Credit donations. This money will help us to continue to provide the many extras that help make Fruchthendler Elementary School the Excelling School it is. Tutors, enrichment activities, PE teacher, Spanish teacher, OMA Artists, extra field trips, the list goes on. Thanks to you we will hopefully be able to maintain the existing programs we have.

I want to thank you all on behalf of the Families that received your gifts during Families Helping Families. The outpouring of gifts was amazing and so appreciated by the receiving families. This community project exemplifies the caring and giving nature of our families. You are all greatly appreciated for your concern for others and how you instill that within your children. A BIG THANK YOU to the parents that organized this event. The 2011 National Center for Education Achievement (NCEA) recognized Fruchthendler Elementary School after asking the question “Which schools are preparing students better than expected?” in the area of writing. Fruchthendler received an Excelling rating. Congratulations students and teachers. Your hard work and dedication is recognized! I want to congratulate Liam Moher for winning the 3-5 Spelling Bee. He will now represent Fruchthendler at the District Spelling Bee January 24.Thank you Mrs. Peebles and your committee for organizing this event. We look forward to the K-2 Bee this month. REMINDERS:

*The student phone in the office is for “emergency calls only” only. (Forgotten lunches, instruments, homework, etc.) It is not to be used for making play dates or spur of the moment sleepovers. *When parking in the neighborhood during school programs, please DO NOT block driveways or mailboxes. *Please check the lost and found in the cafeteria. We still have a large number of sweaters, jackets, coats, and lunchboxes. *Parents, be sure to sign in when you are volunteering/or visiting. We want to maintain accurate records of our volunteer hours. *Drivers along Lodge, please comply with directions from the Parents on Patrol, as they assist in keeping our students safe. *The Bus Bay along Cloud Road is not to be used for student drop-off. *Students not picked up immediately after-school will be sent to the office for their safety until they are picked up. Remember, Wednesday is early dismissal, 2:14PM. Thank you for keeping our student’s safety first! Finally, I want to thank the many volunteers that continue to give their time to help our students receive the very best educational opportunity. The PTA, SITE Council, Parents On Patrol, Art Enrichment Parents, Room Parents, Room Volunteers, the many committees, and so many others who contribute to our success. With your help, Fruchthendler continues to be an Excelling School.

Cordially,
John Heidel, Principal

Coaches needed for spring session of Girls on the Run

Fruchthendler needs 2 female volunteers to serve as coaches for the Spring Girls on the Run (GOTR) session. Without these volunteers, GOTR cannot offer a spring session at Fruchthendler. Lessons will be held at Fruchthendler on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:20 pm to 4:50 pm, beginning February 5th and running through April 20th.

GOTR coaches do not need to be elite runners.   As long as you live a healthy lifestyle and are committed to improving the lives of girls, you can serve as a coach. GOTR coaches empower girls by encouraging positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.

Coaches must attend one half-day training session on January 21st, attend the end of season 5k event on April 22nd and submit to background check. If you are interested in becoming a GOTR coach for Fruchthendler or would like more information about coaching, please contact Sylvia Brown at 324-4745.

School Directory Update

The 2011-2012 school directories were sent home before winter break.  They should have come home with your (oldest) child on Friday, December 16th.  If you paid for a PTA membership and your child did not receive your family's copy, please contact me at dbryanaz@gmail.com.

I would like to thank the kind people at Office Max on Craycroft and Broadway.  They were very helpful and speedy, and provided us with a PTA discount that saved our school over $400.00!  I would also like to thank all of you for your patience while waiting for your directories this year.

Fruchthendler is a Ben’s Bells “Kind Kids” School!
Fruchthendler is participating in the Ben’s Bells “Kind Kids” School Program! Ben’s Bells is a kindness-based community art studio/project started in Tucson after a family experienced the devastating loss of their three-year-old son, Ben. Through art and the various intentional and often random acts of kindness, Ben’s family was able to embrace the mission of promoting the importance of random acts of kindness. The “Kind Kids” School Program is a “new and innovative outreach program to schools which serves to educate and inspire children to recognize the importance of kindness and empowers them to create a culture of kindness in their school and beyond.” [Ben’s Bells: http://www.bensbells.org/KindKids/] We’re kicking off our school’s participation by introducing the students to the Kids’ Kindness Contract, a simple yet meaningful promise to remember to be kind citizens at our school, in our homes, and in our community, whenever possible, even when it isn’t easy. In the next few weeks, presentations and/or materials will be made available to classrooms, including information on how students can nominate various faculty and staff for a monthly Mini-Bell Award. We are excited to have this program at our school! For more information on Ben’s Bells, please visit www.bensbells.org.

Healthy Lifestyles: Girls on the Run

My daughter recently completed the "Girls on the Run" program here at Fruchthendler.  "GOTR" is a 10-week program that encourages 3rd - 5th grade girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running.  The program combines training for a 3.1 mile (5K) running event with group lessons such as getting to know who you are, team building, bullying, peer pressure, being part of a community, and healthy decisions.

When I first signed up my fifth grader she did not want to participate because of the 5K run the girls participate in after the program is over.  I was not a runner myself and I felt I should set a good example for her, so I started training for a 5K myself.  There is an excellent website called "Couch potato to 5K" (www.c25k) which has an detailed running plan.  It gives you instructions on how to start running, alternating between running and walking, slowly increasing the length of the intervals.  You can also find recommended stretching exercises and lots of other helpful information.  Before starting to run I did stop at a running store to get a good pair of running shoes.  But that is pretty much all you need!

On Nov. 13th, 15 GOTR girls, their running buddies, families and the wonderful GOTR coaches showed up at Sabino High school to participate in a 5K running event.  Mr. Heidel even showed up to wish us good luck!  All of the girls finished the 5K, everybody running and/or walking at their own speed.  What an accomplishment! Not only has this program taught my daughter a lot about being a good friend and leading a healthy lifestyle, it has also turned me from a couch potato into a 5K runner!

So, if you have a daughter in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade I can highly recommend this great activity right here at Fruchthendler.  It might get the whole family running!  If you don't, just start running anyway!
