Online Safety Tips By Pam Tankersley
What can I do to stay safe on the Internet? As a student, we welcome you to use the resources that are listed on the Duffy web site. The Internet can be a world of fun and education, but how are you supposed to stay safe? Print out the following rules and keep them by your computer, and you will be a Duffy Safe Surfer! 1. ALWAYS ask an adult before going online - even if you are just doing homework. Your parents, grandparents, or teacher will be able to help you best if they know that you are using the computer. 2. NEVER tell anyone on the Internet your personal information!! This means you cannot tell people your real name, home address, what school you go to, what sports team you are on, or anything else about yourself. 3. If a web site asks you to "sign up," "register," or "sign in," you should stop immediately. Go get an adult to help you with pages that ask you to do this. If for any reason an adult is not there to help you with this type of web page, log off immediately. You can always go back to the web site later. 4. Never tell anyone your password! Some children's web sites have nickname "sign up" areas. After you have an adult's permission to use this type of site, you must always keep your password a secret! 5. Do not tell anyone your e-mail address until you have permission. 6. Some web sites offer "chat" areas, where people can talk to each other through the Internet. Always ask your parents or a trusted adult such as a teacher or grandparent before "chatting" on the Internet. 7. Never "download" or "save" a file without asking permission. 8. Do not read e-mail from a stranger - tell your parents you received a stranger e-mail immediately! 9. If a person on the Internet asks you to meet them in person, NEVER go! This is a stranger danger - when someone on the Internet asks you to meet them, tell your parents immediately! 10.
When in doubt, S.T.O.P.! If you do not feel comfortable with something
you are doing on the Internet, just follow the S.T.O.P rule:
