College Bound

Welcome to the only COLLEGE BOUND elementary school in the Tucson Unified School District!

Our school prides itself in fostering an academic college bound environment to excite elementary students to attend college.  We believe the elementary level is the time to instill the goal of gaining higher education.  Just ask us to show you the data that proves how a college education improves the lives of individuals who take that route.  One of the studies demonstrates how unemployment levels significantly decrease with a college education.  Another study shows the tremendous earning potential of an individual graduating from college.

Adopted Universities

Lyons classrooms have adopted universities, have fun singing their university's fight songs as well as learning about what makes their universities famous.

When you ask the students at Lyons Elementary if they are going to college, you get a resounding,  "YES!".

Trained Faculty

Educators at Lyons are highly qualified according to state guidelines.  Teachers have attended extensive "college bound" training to equip them to work in this demanding environment.   Lyons' teachers have learned the secrets to student success that the other schools haven't. 

Our Plan

Here is just part of how we effect the change:  frequent grade level standards based assessments, data analysis and frequent team planning meetings to implement custom interventions. Lyons becomes a leader in education and a bright star among the schools in Tucson.

GATE Cluster School

Academic rigor for the gifted student who requires extra challenge is available at Lyons.  Our school has become a Gifted and Talented Cluster School where one teacher per grade level is GATE certified!  How many schools can boast that?  A GATE Cluster School means that all students' academic needs are being met. Just one the advantages of this program is the use of theme-based learning kits. 

Full-Day Kindergarten

We will have FREE full-day kindergarten in the upcoming 2011-2012 school year.  The entire local community is excited about this.  Don't delay in enrolling your child today!

A Complete English Learner Program

Lyons has a first rate English Language Learner program.  The program is equipped with an abundance of  visual support materials, audio media for singing and hands-on activities to ensure language understanding.  Comprehensive, research-based instruction meeting Arizona's standards makes our program the solution for today's English learner.  Lyons has an extensive in-class library with book titles by the famous National Geographic School Publishing company. Multi-level assessments to diagnose, plan instruction, and monitor progress completes this program's success. 

Not Your Average Exceptional Education

The Exceptional Education program at Lyons goes beyond limits to ensure students with Individual Education Plans get the services they need.  These teachers use technology extensively, songs and an abundance of caring to educate students of all academic levels. Lyons has a very well staffed Project Able to meet the needs of our pre-school students with special needs.  Fantastic speech services and occupational therapy round out this program.

Restorative Practice

Classrooms have directed restorative circles where students share compliments and concerns with teachers and classmates as well as setting academic and social goals.  An in-school restorative circles expert is available on a regular basis to conduct mini-lessons on conflict resolution and the proper ways of voicing concerns.

University Grade Art and Music Programs

The Visual Arts and Performing Music programs at Lyons consist of more than just coloring or singing.  The art and music instructors dedicate many selfless hours of their time to help students produce standards based artwork and music masterpieces.  Lyons often has its students' artwork on display at school and in the community.  Recorder, violin and band concerts cap off the year.

Technology at Lyons

Lyons has an interactive whiteboard  in most of its classrooms. Two additional ones will be installed this summer.  Our updated classroom computers help students  learn how to type, conduct research and present their work to their classmates on a regular basis.  The library contains a bank of modern computers and a librarian who runs the technology. 

Library Media Center

Our certified teacher librarian makes sure our library media center is the literacy center of the school.  She works with all classes to ensure information literacy is part of the students' daily lives.  She also holds weekly book sharing sessions with the students.  Love of reading quickly becomes part of the students' lives after attending these special sessions.
