Clevelands Early life Grover Cleveland was born in 1837, Caldwell, New Jersey. Clevelands full name was Stephen Grover Cleveland. Cleveland was the fifth child of Richard Falley Cleveland, a Presbyterian Minister, Clevelands mom was Ann Neal Cleveland. Four years later his family moved near Syracuse, New York, where his father became the minister for Presbyterian church. Stephen Cleveland attended a local school, and when he was thirteen he was entered an academy in Clinton. When his father died in 1853 it removed any hop that Cleveland might have had of attending college. Cleveland earned his own way to contribute to his mothers support, what he did was go to New York City, where he taught for a year at an institution for the blind. Cleveland decided to go to Cleveland, Ohio, but as far as he got was Buffalo, New York. In New York he worked for his wealthy uncle. His uncle was a national cattle breeder, his uncle let him look after the herd books of the cattle company. A year later Cleveland decided to study the practice of law. Cleveland studied at his uncles friends offices, in 1859 was licensed to practice law. Political Career Cleveland soon showed the political independence that characterized his future career. Clevelands uncle the best well known citizen in the city of Buffalo except for former President Millard Fillmore ( 1850 to 1853 ), who had organized Erie Countys Republican party. Cleveland Decided to join the Democratic party instead of the Republican party because the Democratic party was solid.In his Political career Stephen became Mayor of Buffalo, Governor of New York, Cleveland also served out two times as President of the United States, once in 1885 to 1889 and the other one was in 1893 to 1897. Marriage Early in June 1886, the 49-year old married Frances Folsom, which was the daughter of former law partner. They were the first couple to be married in the White House. The couple had three daughters and one son.Last Years Cleveland died in 1908 at his Princeton home. His last words were "I have tried so hard to do right!" |
