Introduction

You will be learning about my President Ulysses S. Grant. I will be talking to you about his early Life, West Point, his Family, and how he became the President of the United States.

Early Life

In 1869 Ulysses S. Grant became our eighteenth president of the United States. Before becoming our president he was a farmer, real estate seller, and clerking in a customs house.

Ulysses S. Grant lived on a frontier with his family. He was born in Hiram. Grant’s father Jesse Root Grant was a tanner. His mother was a pious, hardworking women on the frontier. At about the age of 14, his father moved him nearby Georgetown, where he attended school there. Ulysses also went to Maysville Seminary in Maysville, Kentucky, and the Presbyterian Academy in Ripley, Ohio.

West Point

When he was about the 17 his father sent him off to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was now entered in West Point in May of 1839. In school Grant excelled in horsemanship and mathematics, but Grant liked discipline and drills more than anything.

Ulysses S. Grant graduated in 1843 with not even a average scholarship record. Grant ranked 21st in a class of 39. Grant wanted to get a position as a mathematics teacher at the West Point Academy. Instead he was assigned to infantry duty on the southern frontier.

Family

Ulysses S. Grant was married to Julia Dent, Julia was the daughter of a plantation owner. Her sister was a student at West Point.

Ulysses and Julia had three boys and Frederick, Ulysses Jr., and Jesse, and a daughter named Ellen.

President Of The United States

After serving in the Civil War he carried out his duties by becoming a supreme commander of the army. People said that he was unsuited to be in office or even be a President. The people also said that he had no talent nor did he understand politics. In office he did the presidents work like a military officer would. In office he acted like he had total control over everything. He seemed to have no comprehension of what he was doing in the office.

In 1869 Ulysses S. Grant became president of the United States. Grant had no idea what to do as their President. Ulysses S. Grant did not have any judgment at all. Ulysses S. Grant was a very trust worthy men, especially with his friends. Unfortunately he was always getting betrayed by his friends.

In 1877 Ulysses S. Grant was over elected by someone. After that he went back to his old life.

On July 23, 1885 Ulysses S. Grant died of throat cancer. He was one of the best generals in history, but one of the worst presidents of the U.S..
