George Washington was the first President of  the United States (1789-1797). He was elected in Virginia.

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland Country, Va. His occupation as a boy was a planter, soldier. He married Martha Dandridge Custis in 1759. She was a widow, and already had two children, Jackie and Patsy. Then Washington and his wife Martha adopted two other children, which they named Nelly and George Washington, Jr. Parke Custis.

George Washington was the only hope to hold the new nation together, according to his country men. When ever there was hard job to do they will always turn to Washington and let do the job. He was a boy surveyor on Virginia’s frontier. Then he command a big-boned youth on the colony’s militia.

He rode beside the British General Braddock when the French and Indian foes began and shot deadly fire from behind trees, bullets pierced his hat and coat. They were also able to kill horses, Washington still keep his head tall while others broke and ran. Finally, it was all over.

After that, trouble came with Britain and Washington was chosen to command the American forces. He was on field for eight long years. Independence to him seemed like a lost cause in 1776. On Christmas night of 1776. General Washington and a few of his men and horses crossed the icy Delaware River and seized Trenton. After terrible winter at Valley Forge, his persistence won a promise of French help.

Finally freedom came. Washington was called the Father of His Country and headed the convention were the constitution was written. It was then when Washington became the first President of the United States, he was the only one who was the choice of everyone. There they battled. Alexander Hamilton led the Federalists. Thomas Jefferson was to form the Democratic- Republican party.

After two terms Washington retired, worn out by long service. General, President, and as Founding Father, he saw thirteen colonies become a free nation. Washington died on December 14, 1799 in Mount Vernon, Va. Since then Washington has been remembered as " First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his country men."
