Re: Student drop-off and pick-up

Please be advised that the designated drop-off and pick-up area for Tucson High School is the marked spaces on the south side of the school on 8th Street . Be aware that in this neighborhood there are many no parking zones such as red curbs and residential parking zones. The city of Tucson traffic enforcement has ticketed THMS parents and students who are parked illegally in these areas. Students should also not be dropped-off or picked-up in city or school bus loading and unloading zones around the school. The traffic on 6th Street and 2nd Avenue , near Roskruge, is especially dangerous considering the amount of traffic and the large groups of students who use that intersection. We are presently in communication with the district, city officials, and neighborhood groups in order to find solutions, which are in the best interest of all parties and to address traffic and the safety of our students. We too are concerned and expect our students to follow all school rules and obey the law to and from school.

The neighborhoods that surround THMS have also expressed concerns about inappropriate and illegal activity within these areas. Examples of problems have been about the amount of trash thrown in these areas, loitering, graffiti, smoking, and general misconduct. Some of the illegal activities include trespassing, use of illegal substance, disorderly conduct, and vandalism. The conduct of THMS students coming to school and going home is subject to the TUSD Guidelines for Student Rights and Responsibilities, Section A, 2. Students will be held accountable for inappropriate behaviors under this section. All students have received these guidelines during their homeroom class this semester. If parents would like a copy, please stop by the main office or V115B.

We ask for your assistance in addressing this issue with your student as we collaborate to keep THMS as safe as possible and minimize their exposure to activities that may place them in danger or involved in inappropriate behaviors.  We wish to provide a quality education to our students, maintain safety, and be good neighbors within our community. Please assist us in this matter. Attached you will find a map that outlines the student drop-off and pick-up areas. Thank you.
