How far is 7400 miles? Only an arm’s reach away, at Townsend. Once again this year, students from Ulleung do, South Korea have arrived, and have very quickly become part of the Townsend family. Seventeen young men and women from the small island often described as a “lush, floating forest” arrived at the airport on Saturday to find welcome signs and excited host families. On Monday, the group started the month long visit with a Welcome Breakfast where they were served traditional American foods and entertained by Mariachi Aztlan and Korean drummers. The event’s guest list included the mayor’s wife, several Tucson area political leaders, representatives from the Korean government, and TUSD officers.
The Korean students were paired up with 21 Townsend Ambassadors, who escorted them from class to class, gave them hints about coping with middle school life in Arizona, and almost immediately, started sharing jokes and laughter. The process for becoming an Ambassador is a highly selective one, and those in the group will be honored with a great deal of responsibility as well as many unique opportunities over the next month. Townsend students will sample sushi and learn traditional Korean songs and dance. Students from Ulleung Do will come face to face with javelina at the Desert Museum, witness a gunfight at Old Tucson, and marvel at the enormous planes at the Air Museum.
What is the next step in the Exchange? We can only hope that the visit will be an unforgettable opportunity to connect in ways that will be remembered far longer than emails, phone calls, and instant messages.
