from Ms. Kohl… celebrating our diversity… A person could wait a lifetime to experience what happened here at Townsend on Thursday, October 9, 2008. Those who came to the Celebration of Cultural Diversity found that in the space of an hour, families were able to travel to over 35 different countries, gathering “passport stamps” in each destination. Nearly 500 parents, students, and community members embarked on a whirlwind tour; tasting foods, viewing artwork and crafts, and expanding knowledge about the many cultures and lands around the globe. Guests may have arrived with limited world experience, but left seasoned travelers!
Students from the 6th grade HOUSE and Townsend’s English Language Development classrooms teamed up to prepare the array of visual displays, written reports, and delicious dishes. Many hours of preparation and collaboration went into the development of this cultural celebration, and “tourists” who attended were touched by the obvious support and commitment of the family community. One parent remarked, “What a great moment to see everyone and really get that sense that we truly belong.” This event provided just the right balance: it highlighted and celebrated diversity while also emphasizing common threads.
Enthusiasm was contagious as invited guests arrived at the door to pick up their “map” and “passport.” Representatives from both Senator McCain’s and Senator Obama’s campaigns arrived and assisted in acknowledging students for their efforts. Students selected their destination based on interests, experiences, and some deeper ties; many students opted to represent their countries of origin; the locations where their military parents or family members are stationed; and the lands to which they wish to travel some day.
CONGRATULATIONS to the students, families and teachers who worked so hard to make the celebration happen. It was a memorable journey for all. |
