computer information literacy learning lab policies

The library learning lab is primarily for student Internet research related to classroom curriculum.

It is for students to work on producing their own work, such as using Microsoft Word to write their reports or PowerPoint to do a classroom presentation.

The library learning lab is not used to teach computer skills, except on an as-needed basis, as preparation for producing student work.

bullet

The library learning lab does not allow for games, student email, chat rooms, or personal Web browsing, except on a limited basis, or in concert with educational curriculum.  It is for school-related assignments and research.

The librarian will also team teach with teachers to teach students how to evaluate web pages and how to use boolean searching techniques to get the best search results.

The librarian is available to assist teachers in creating Web Quests and other Internet-related projects.  The library promotes integrating technology into the classroom, in accordance with National Technology Standards and directed inquiry according to National Information Literacy Standards.

Utterback library promotes intellectual property rights.  The librarian will teach lessons on documentation of resources and how to write a bibliography for various types of resources.  Bibliography forms are available from the librarian for students to list sources as they do their research.

How may teachers sign up their classes for using the library computer learning lab?

Teachers sign up on the schedule in the library on a first come, first served basis.

bullet

Teachers may also email the librarian with a list of times they would like, and the librarian will sign them up if there are any openings.

May teachers send individual students to do computer research or work on their projects?
bullet

Yes.  Teachers may send up to eight students on individual passes at any time to use the computers for class work.

bullet

Library computers are available first come, first served or by reservation, so individual students may be sent back to class if there is no computer available.

What other computer learning services are available?

The new Follett Library Circulation software has the capability to create bibliographies of materials available through the library for any curricular area, including listing web pages relating to the topic.

See the librarian to collaborate planning for a curriculum-related research project.

The librarian can put teachers and students in contact with AZ State supported databases for research in any curriculum area.
