We welcome new players as well as seasoned "professionals," and our coach makes sure each chess club day is a combination of instruction and playing time. Sometimes mini tournaments are held, creating a climate of healthy competition. Many of our members choose to participate in Southern Arizona Chess Association meets; hence the fabulous array of trophies on the back counter of our room. Others choose to play only against each other during club meeting time.
Dr. Marilyn Heins, local parenting expert, wrote in her column for the Arizona Daily Star that the relationship between playing chess and acquiring math, reading, and critical thinking skills is a strong one, and cites data to support her contention. One study showed critical thinking skills improved by 17% in students taking chess classes, versus 5% for other classes. She also says that chess teaches patience and courtesy. And although there are no real data, many anecdotes support chess improving concentration and focus in ADHD kids. And that can translate into better school performance. So chess isn't just fun -- it is good for your child!
